General details about Google Play in-app subscriptions
To purchase a subscription within the app, you will need to have an Android 7.0 or higher. Learn how to update your Android version.
When your subscription begins, you will be charged and billed by Google Play, not by ExpressVPN, based on your subscription plan (weekly, monthly, or yearly). The billing will continue unless you cancel your subscription at least 24 hours before the next billing cycle begins.
Some ExpressVPN plans on the Google Play Store include a free trial. If a free trial is included in your plan, your subscription will begin after the free trial ends. You can only sign up for the free trial once. The free trial is available within the app downloaded via the Google Play Store with a valid payment method.
If you no longer want to use ExpressVPN after the free trial, cancel at least 24 hours before the expiry date.

Update billing information or payment methods
I want to be billed through the Google Play but via a different payment method.
If you want to be billed in the Play Store with a different payment method, learn how to add, remove, or edit your payment method.
I want to be billed directly, not through Google Play (credit card, PayPal, etc.)
If you want to be billed directly via ExpressVPN, not Google Play:
- In the Play Store app, cancel your subscription (at least 24 hours before your next billing cycle begins). After you cancel, you can continue to use ExpressVPN until the expiry date.
- When your subscription is about to expire, go to https://portal.expressvpn.com/ and renew your ExpressVPN subscription.
- You will be able to select the payment method of your choice.
- Once payment is confirmed, you can continue to use ExpressVPN.
After your current billing cycle ends, you will be billed via ExpressVPN directly.

Resubscribe to a Play Store subscription after canceling
Before the expiry date (ExpressVPN is still working)
If you have canceled a free trial or subscription from the Play Store but change your mind before the account expiry date, you can still resubscribe. Your new subscription will begin at the expiry date of your canceled subscription.
Before you begin, make sure you’re signed into the same Google account in the Play Store that you used for your subscription.
- Open the Play Store app and tap on your profile in the top-right corner.
- Tap Payments & Subscriptions.
- Select Subscriptions.
- Select the ExpressVPN app you used to originally purchase your subscription: ExpressVPN, ExpressKeys, or Identity Defender.
- Tap Resubscribe again in the pop-up.
After the expiry date (ExpressVPN is inactive)
If you canceled a free trial or subscription from the App Store and the expiry date has passed, you can get a new subscription with the same credentials. Your new subscription will begin immediately.
If you are still signed into the ExpressVPN app:
- Open the VPN tab.
- Choose a subscription and tap Subscribe.
- Confirm the purchase with your Google account credentials or biometrics.
If you are no longer signed into the ExpressVPN app:
- Open the Play Store app and tap on your profile in the top-right corner. (Make sure you are signed into the Google account you used to sign up for your free trial or subscription.)
- Tap Payments & Subscriptions.
- Select Subscriptions.
- Select the ExpressVPN app you used to originally purchase your subscription: ExpressVPN, ExpressKeys, or Identity Defender.
- Tap Resubscribe again in the pop-up.
If your subscription has ended and you want to resubscribe through the ExpressVPN+ portal instead (so you can be billed by ExpressVPN directly, not Google Play), follow these instructions.

Money-back guarantee (refunds)
Subscriptions purchased via the Google Play Store are eligible for:
- ExpressVPN’s 30-day money-back guarantee (for first-time customers only)
Check this guide to learn how to get a refund.
After your request is processed, your subscription status in the Play Store app will change to “Refunded.” You will no longer be able to use the ExpressVPN app. Customers who have received a money-back guarantee refund are ineligible to receive subsequent ones.
