What is an eSIM? What do I use it for?

An embedded SIM (eSIM) works in the same way as a regular SIM card to provide you with network reception. But unlike a SIM card, you don’t have to physically insert an eSIM—just download and install it on your device and you’re all set.

You can use eSIMs to avoid expensive roaming fees while traveling, as well as switch data carriers without fiddling around with physical SIM cards.

How do I get the eSIM?

A holiday.com eSIM is currently included with the ExpressVPN Advanced and Pro tier subscriptions, or you can purchase an eSIM separately via the holiday.com app, the holiday.com website, or your ExpressVPN dashboard.

If you’re eligible for a free eSIM, you’ll receive an email with your coupon code and instructions once your subscription begins. If you’re on a free trial, your coupon code will be sent after the trial ends and your paid subscription starts.

You can also redeem your code directly in your ExpressVPN+ dashboard. On the Home tab, select Redeem next to the holiday.com eSIM widget. For step-by-step instructions, see our guide to setting up your holiday.com eSIM.

Does my device support eSIMs?

You can find a full list of eSIM-compatible devices here.

If your device is compatible with eSIMs and carrier-unlocked, you should be able to set up a holiday.com eSIM without a hitch. However, devices originating from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau do not support eSIMs.

If you purchase an eSIM via the holiday.com app, you do not need an ExpressVPN account to use the eSIM. However, if you want to redeem the eSIM bundled with your ExpressVPN subscription, you will need an ExpressVPN account.

Can I buy the eSIM on its own?

Yes. You can buy a holiday.com eSIM directly from your ExpressVPN+ dashboard or from the holiday.com app or website. 

To buy an eSIM from your ExpressVPN+ dashboard:

  1. Sign into your ExpressVPN account.
  2. Select holiday.com eSIM on the left, then select eSIM Store.
  3. Choose your desired destination.
  4. Select your desired duration and click Continue.
  5. Choose your payment method, fill in the details, confirm your device supports eSIMs, and select Buy Now.

You don’t need an ExpressVPN subscription or account to buy or use a holiday.com eSIM from the app or website.

Can I cancel or refund the eSIM?

Yes, holiday.com eSIMs are flexible and commitment-free. If your eSIM is unused, you can request a full refund within 6 months (180 days) of purchase, no questions asked. Just make sure it was bought directly through the holiday.com app or website. The same applies if your device turns out to be incompatible or carrier-locked.

If you experience connectivity issues due to a fault on our end, reach out to holiday.com Support as soon as possible during your trip, and you may be eligible for a full or partial refund depending on data usage.

All refunds are issued to the original payment method.

Can I move or reinstall the eSIM?

Once your eSIM has been installed, it cannot be moved to a different device. If it has been deleted/removed, it can only be reinstalled on the same device.

How do I redeem my coupon code?

If a holiday.com eSIM is included as part of your ExpressVPN subscription, you’ll receive a confirmation email with your coupon code and instructions on how to redeem it. Eligible users on a free trial will receive their eSIM once the trial period ends and their paid subscription begins.

You can also find and redeem your coupon code in your ExpressVPN+ dashboard.

To redeem your code from your ExpressVPN+ dashboard:

  1. Sign into your ExpressVPN account.
  2. On the Home tab, select Redeem next to the holiday.com eSIM widget.
  3. You’ll be taken to the eSIM Store tab. Select your desired destination.
  4. Choose your preferred duration by dragging the slider left or right. You can only apply the coupon if the duration is equal to or lower than the allocated amount on your code (3 days for Advanced users, 5 days for Pro users). 
  5. Choose Myself if the eSIM is for you or Others if you’re assigning it to someone else or a second device, such as a work phone.
  6. Select the coupon code under Apply coupon.
  7. Select Continue With Coupon. This automatically redeems the eSIM and applies it to your account.

Once redeemed, set up the eSIM using the holiday.com mobile app. After installation, use your eSIM within 365 days.

How long do I have to redeem the code?

You have until the end of your current ExpressVPN plan to redeem your coupon code. Once redeemed, you have 365 days to install and activate the eSIM using the holiday.com app.

  2. Select an eligible country.

To do this, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the holiday.com app on your iOS or Android device.
  2. Tap on the profile icon at the upper-right corner of the screen.
  3. Select the Chat with us option to initiate a conversation.
